I’m a Mac girl. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m one of those people who loved Macs even in that dark period prior to the half-dome iMac and first iPod. I’ve used Macs for as long as I can remember. And as my beloved 12″ PowerBook G4 nears the end of its lifespan, I find myself torn. Do I go for the black MacBook that I had long assumed would be the heir apparent, or do I succumb to the sheer beauty of the MacBook Air?
I saw the Air for the first time today, at the Apple store in the mall, and could not believe that it was a real computer. It looks like a beautiful prop from a futuristic movie. This couldn’t possibly be real. And yet, there it was. I had to step away so that I wouldn’t drool on it.
With this fresh in my mind, I sent an IM to a techie friend who is decidedly a PC guy. “What would you think if you were a client (or potential client) and I walked in with a MacBook Air?”
He replied, “I’d think that you were creative, cutting-edge and very expensive.”
Hmm, as a contractor, is that the impression that I want to give? I suppose the answer is only yes if clients are willing to pay more for my slick and beautiful presentation, not if I look like I’m pricing myself out of the job.
From a practical point of view, the black MacBook makes more sense. It’s got more capability, and I could easily get the black MacBook and an iPhone for the price of the MacBook Air. So the question is whether I want more for my money, or if I’m that swayed by the sheer beauty of it.
