Social Surplus

I found a fantastic speech that discusses the role of television and our collective available time as a society. People often ask me where I find the hours in the day for freelance work, parenting a toddler, contributing time to a nonprofit, exercising and reading books. The answer is that I don’t watch TV. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as much a fan of Deadliest Catch as the next person, but it’s a rare week when our television turns on more than twice (not including when my son finds the remote and gets button-happy).

In the time that we spend watching TV, we could create roughly 2,000 Wikipedia-sized projects. If that’s anywhere even close to true, isn’t it time that we scale back our watching and start doing something?
