Twitter and Copywriting

There’s an old adage about web copywriting that goes something like, “write it, edit it by half, then edit it by half again.” It’s the modern-day equivalent of ye olde “KISS” — keep it simple, stupid. This isn’t always possible, of course — it’s a struggle to explain WLAN security or vascular surgery techniques in 250 words or less — but I always try to keep the spirit of the adage in mind, even if I can’t follow it to the letter.

This is why I find Twitter to be so fascinating. You get 140 characters to tell people what you’re thinking. Not 140 words or even 140 letters. Characters, spaces and punctuation included. If that doesn’t force you to get to the point, nothing will.

For this reason, I’m trying to spend more time twittering (tweeting?) and less time blogging. I love to blog, and have more than a handful of things to write about at any time, but do I really need to inundate you with my words? Maybe it’s better to keep it concise and stick with Twitter to make my points.

So if you’re interested, please follow me on Twitter. I’m the one that goes by the alias of clearwriter.

I too am fascinated by tweets and think they’re a great way to, well, tweet. But if we really want to sing (and all birds, er, people do), blogs may still be the way to go.

So keep your blog posts coming and there are many like me who will still read them.
