The 3rd 40: Day 4, 5 and 6

I am sore.

I started Thursday’s kickboxing class still sore from Tuesday’s. Adding another major workout only managed to highlight some additional muscles that I didn’t previously know that I’d had. I tried to counteract that with some yoga and stretching, which was a good decision, considering that I was still able to move on Saturday morning.

Friday was the Big Kickoff Call for the Big New Project, and I have to say that I’m equally excited and nervous about it. There are a lot of elements to it and a lot of moving parts; I’ll feel much better after my initial meetings are taken care of and a more tangible plan is in place.

I made my Friday afternoon much easier by choosing to make pot roast for dinner on a chilly, drizzly day. It’s nice to be able to spend uninterrupted time with the boy after picking him up from preschool. Sure, he likes to cook, but he also likes to snuggle on the couch and read book after book after book; wonder who he gets that gene from?

Whatever you call it, it looked gorgeous and tasted great.

Saturday and Sunday were all about family and food, and I didn’t work at all. Saturday’s dinner — grilled herbed chicken, fresh asparagus and homemade matzoh — was thrown together at the last minute, yet still managed to seem kind of impressive and was fairly healthy. Sunday’s meals took lots more planning, including tracking down what turned out to be the most convoluted recipe for paska (or babka; there’s debate about the correct name) and making homemade spaetzle. We started the day right with a huge pancake breakfast, topped with the fresh strawberries that we got at the farmer’s market on Saturday.

What do you enjoy?

The weekend’s wisdom came from a petite elderly lady at Peet’s. She sat down at the table next to me and sipped her espresso from one of those lovely demitasse cups that just look so elegant compared to a giant mug. We made eye contact and smiled. She held up her cup and leaned in like she was going to tell me a secret. “I’ve been Catholic all my life and gave up caffeine for Lent,” she said. “Then I realized: life’s too short to be giving up anything you truly enjoy.” I have to say, I like her philosophy.
