The 3rd 40: Days 9 and 10

My shiny new car.

Wednesday was a magnificent example of flexible scheduling and balance. I was awake before dawn to negotiate contracts and catch up on much-needed accounting work (one of the many, many hats in the freelance wardrobe). I managed to get the boy fed, dressed and off to preschool in time for a conference call before heading down to San Jose to pick up my new car.

(As an aside, after several bad experiences with various car dealerships, I have to give a big, grateful shout out to Tony Signorelli at Courtesy Chevrolet. He was not only easy to work with, he saved me a bunch of money.)

I got back home in time to fire up the oven and do my best Betty Draper imitation, spending the rest of the day preparing dinner for one of my husband’s colleagues. Roast chicken, asparagus salad, homemade grainy bread (recipe to come later) and a store-bought chocolate cake because hey, I’d cooked enough already, thank you.

The ultimate moment of multitasking? Talking to a client while driving across town to pick up the boy, all while bread was baking at home.

In the midst of all of this Wednesday chaos, I didn’t have time to exercise, and that was just fine because I could barely move my lower body after Tuesday’s kickboxing buttkicking. Sitting down? Fine. Standing up? Fine? Moving any muscle below my waist? Definitely not fine.

In spite of this, I went back to kickboxing today, still sore as can be. But I had another really good workout and I’ve decided that there’s really no better whole-body exercise value than this class. I still love Pilates and will continue to do it on Saturday mornings, and I still plan to run regularly, but this combines cardio, strength and concentration in a way that nothing else does.

Tonight's book.

As soon as I finish this post, I’ll be heading off to bed to read Shanghai Girls by Lisa See, a book that was given to me by one of my fellow book club members. I’m about a third of the way into it, and it’s far from uplifting, but like all of See’s books, it’s well written and compelling.
