I’ve probably already mentioned that the scheduled cross-training (a.k.a. non-running) days of the plan don’t coincide with my Tuesday and Thursday kickboxing class. No problem, I thought. On Tuesdays, I’ll just do my usual kickboxing in the morning and then do the coached run at the track in the evening. Easy.
Easy? Ha!
Perhaps the problem started when Tess, my kickboxing instructor, pulled out a new and difficult routine, capped with some serious weight work using abs and arms in the final 20 minutes. You know, on top of the 100 pushups and 100 triceps dips that we already do. Gah! I was pretty much beat by the time I got into the car, but hey, I had more than eight hours to recover.
Then again, perhaps it was the approximately three miles — fast miles — that we did at the TNT workout at the track. I haven’t run for speed since… uh… ever. As Coach Tim and Coach Marcie gave us some gentle prodding, we did a slowish mile, some sprints, a top speed mile (which for me was a personal record-breaking 9:40; I am clearly not a Kenyan marathoner) and then a 10 minute cooldown run before stretching.
Yes, I was sore, and yes, I was tired, but on the bright side, The Daily Plate told me that I had an extra 920 calories to spend for the day, so I got to enjoy heaping bowl of homemade cherry crisp without guilt. Mmm.
By the time I went to bed last night (with a little ibuprofen nightcap, no less), I was feeling the day’s workouts in every single muscle in my body. I slept like a log, but felt surprisingly ok this morning — slightly sore, but not overwhelmingly so. I was going to do some yoga with my Wii Fit, but then decided that maybe I should take it easy during the day and just walk a bit at night.
The big surprise? Midway through this afternoon, I was exhausted. Not afternoon-doldrums sleepy. I’m talking about completely and totally dead to the world. I set my phone timer for 20 minutes and proceeded to fall asleep the minute my head hit the couch. Weird. I can’t even remember the last time I napped, and I don’t think I’ve ever done it on a weekday before.
Because of my travel schedule (en route for most of the day and at the Tom Petty concert in Red Rocks at night), I need to swap my Thursday 30-minute non-run workout with the Friday off day. It looks like there’s both a decent gym and pool at my hotel, so I should have plenty of options.
