On Monday afternoons, a group of elderly Greek ladies meets at my Peet’s. They roll in, one by one, leaning on their walkers and escorted by their daughters, caregivers of the driver of the senior transit van. They talk loudly, as the hard-of-hearing often do, so I feel like I’ve been part of every conversation that they have.
Marie, 4’9” with a bouffant white perm, is the most tech-savvy of the bunch. A few months ago, she bought Bluetooth headsets for all of them after watching Oprah. She had been convinced of the perils of talking while in motion. “We shouldn’t be using our phones while walking,” she admonished. “Not without one of these.”
This week, Marie showed up with her latest toy: a new iPhone 4. They all oohed and aahed. They took movies and sellf-portraits. They sent texts and emails. They laughed. And they proclaimed it to be the single most amazing invention since TiVo.
May we all be so entertained when we reach their age.
