Realities of the Green New Deal

Last updated on January 6, 2023

I work in the sustainability area nearly every day. The scientific realities are terrifying. I have to admit that I was thrilled to see that there’s a political movement toward keeping us under even a 2 degree Celsius increase in global temperatures. Yet there’s been plenty of discussion and outright mockery of the Green New Deal, which I think ignores two very important points.

“They’re out of touch with reality.” No. We’re on track for a climate disaster in our lifetimes, not hundreds of years from now. We need to take drastic action. Just because we can’t cover every empty square meter of Nevada and Arizona with solar panels doesn’t mean that we should do nothing and continue to burn fossil fuels.

”It’s over-the-top and impractical!” Maybe. But you don’t begin negotiations where you want to end up. You start big and meet in the middle.

Look, I don’t care what your politics are, and who you dislike personally. The reality is that climate change affects you. Sitting back and mocking the situation isn’t getting any of us

any closer to a world that we can actually live in. We need a plan that gets us there, and I support any effort that gets that conversation started.
